wanderlust
/ˈwɒndəˌlʌst/
A strong desire or impulse to travel and explore the world.
This is not a hand-crafted project, but it is an interesting way to accent your home and to share with others all the wonderful places you've visited.
It all started with the Canyonlands card below.
Our daughter sent us this wooden postcard from the Canyonlands. We had been there before and suggested she visit the area. I'd never seen a wooden postcard before and thought it was a really unique memento of places visited. On future travels I made a point of looking for these wooden postcards.
I eventually collected 5 postcards and started contemplating where and how I might display them. Then it struck me... we have a large supporting beam running the width of our house and I had often thought about adding some colorful tiles to it. The wooden postcard was the perfect size to run along the beam. But, I needed many more cards to make this work. My husband and I have certainly traveled over the years to many wonderful locations, but was it possible to still get postcards of these places?
Just by chance, I browsed Amazon * to see if you could purchase this type of card for specific locations and sure enough I found several! The remaining ones I needed were found on Etsy and Ebay. I made a list of everywhere we have been and began searching and shopping for them. I think I found all but one of the places we had been to. At the end I had 20 cards - enough to at least accent that beam over the kitchen area.
I didn't want to glue or nail them to the beam. I thought they should look more like artwork presented on a shelf. So I purchased some wall molding trim at Home Depot and tacked that to the beam and the postcards actually sit on it. The display is not always noticed right away by visitors, but when it is, it brings about lots of conversations about favorite travel places and good memories.
A few more cards we picked up while on our travels.
